Short story from during my time living with the Annos, my Ghanaian host family:
Essie, my "little sister," was picking at her food. Lydia (my "mother") turned to her and said, "EAT IT! There are starving children in China!" To which Essie responds, "what can I do? Can I mail it there?" I was internally laughing, since that's what my mother used to say to us in the U.S. (although then it was "there are starving children in Africa"). It was not super appropriate perhaps, but I hope you see the irony in this as much as I do.
